Woodland Elementary School is helping all students develop the World Class Skills defined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment. We provide such an environment through the implementation of our school vision: Where every leader succeeds in learning and life. We demonstrate this vision by challenging our students with best practices to reach their full potential and the continuous professional development of our teachers.
Teachers at Woodland continuously seek to learn new and effective strategies to use in their classrooms to promote student learning. Examples include: Fountas and Pinnell Balanced Literacy Approach, ERI (Early Reading Intervention), RTI (Response to Intervention), LLI (Leveled Literacy Intervention), Writing Workshop, utilization of formative and summative assessments to drive instructions as well as analyzing and tracking data with students to monitor progress. Positions such as reading interventionists, literacy specialist, and our school counselors provide specialized small group instruction and counseling designed to focus on academic behavior to impact student performance in the classroom.
Woodland Elementary is very proud of our programs outside of the academic realm that focus on the development of the whole child. As a LEADER IN ME School, we consistently focus on embedding the 7 Habits of an Effective Leader in all areas of life and developing the natural leadership potential that every child has within them. Our school counselors and teachers teach the 7 Habits of Leadership and embed leadership principles throughout all curriculum areas and activities. We believe it is imperative that our students learn what it means to be a leader and understand how these skills will help to ensure success now and throughout their lives. We are equipping our students with the necessary skills to prepare them for college and their future careers. In addition to assuming leadership roles and fulfilling specific job tasks, our students are engaged in service learning projects that are designed to make a difference in their community.
Woodland is fortunate to be able to partner with local businesses that provide mentors for our students. These dedicated volunteers meet weekly with their mentees to build and maintain supportive relationships that positively impact students’ self-esteem and motivate these young learners to become more responsible and self-directed. Our BETA Club partners with a variety of service organizations each year. Some examples include providing needed supplies for disadvantaged students, raising money for local charitable organizations, gathering canned goods for the local food bank, and collecting gently used coats for needy students.
We believe the school, family, and community must share the educational responsibility of our youth. Woodland thanks you for your support as, together, we help develop our future South Carolina graduates and world leaders!
