Greetings from Merriwether Middle School! Merriwether Middle School is a student-centered community that is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing opportunities for students to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students at Merriwether Middle School are also provided with learning opportunities that allow for teamwork and collaboration.
Teachers and administrators work to provide learning opportunities that challenge students to think and perform at higher levels. Merriwether Middle School had 31 students who were recognized as Junior Beta Club members for the 2017-2018 school year. Based on their PSAT scores, Merriwether Middle School had 8 students who were identified as Junior Scholars.
To help all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate, Merriwether Middle School implemented small group problem-solving and conflict resolution circles to help students with the development of interpersonal skills during the 2017-2018 school year. In addition to these small groups, the guidance counselor implemented career planning lessons to students in an effort to help students begin to explore career options. To meet the emotional needs of our students beyond what our guidance counselor offers, Merriwether Middle School also added the services of a licensed mental health counselor during the 2017-2018 school year.
Beyond academic achievement, our students consistently excel in other areas, such as fine arts and athletics. Forty-two Merriwether Middle School students performed at South Carolina's Solo and Ensemble and forty-two students received either an Excellent or Superior rating. In addition, our band program received the Outstanding Performance Award 2017-2018 from the South Carolina Music Association. In addition to band, our music department allows for students to participate in chorus, honor choir, and to learn piano and guitar. Drama is also available to students. Merriwether Middle School continues to offer project-based learning classes that allow students to develop world class skills by building, creating, and designing. These opportunities are available to students through Project Lead the Way. Athletically our boys' basketball team earned the title of ECC Tournament Champions. Our girls' volleyball and girls' soccer teams had successful seasons during the 2017-2018 school year. Both teams won their region again.
Merriwether Middle School prides itself on building community and stakeholder relations. Merriwether Middle School's PTO is successful in bringing school and community together through organizing our winter and spring Dessert Theaters each school year. They also bring our school family together by hosting dances for students and offering other fundraisers, such as the Harlem Superstars performance. Our School Improvement Council is also helpful in supporting the vision of Merriwether Middle School by continuously striving for additional ways to bring our school and community together.
We extend a sincere invitation to visit our school at any time.
Sincerely,
Derek Forrest, Principal
