Greer Middle School’s mission is to empower students to become independent, productive learners who exemplify good character. During the 2017-2018 school year, 105 students earned high school credit in English I, Algebra I, Geometry, and Spanish I.
Extracurricular activities for GMS students include seven sports teams, visual and performing arts opportunities, Student Council, Beta Club, Yearbook Club, and high school sports at Greer High School. The girls’ volleyball team earned a spot in the playoffs by winning the region championship for the second year in a row and went on and finish 2nd in the district. The girls’ basketball team earned a spot in the playoffs. The boys’ and girls' soccer teams all earned spots in the playoffs. The Greer Middle School band program received the schools first ever SC Outstanding Performance Award. This recognizes our band program as one of the top bands in the state.In addition, we had one student participate in All-State Band, five students earn chairs into the Region 1 Honor Band and twelve students in the Greenville County Honor Band. The GMS Honor Band earned a Superior with Distinction rating (the highest rating) in at the state level Concert Performance Assessment The 6th grade beginner band earned an Superior rating at the Carowinds Festival of Music. At the state level Solo/Ensemble Performance Assessment, we had thirty-two students earn a Superior. Greer Middle School Honor Band participated in the Art of the Foley workshop in Universal Studios.
Eighteen GMS chorus students participated in the Spring Sing, Greenville County Honor Choir. Eighth grade chorus received an Excellent rating and the State Choral performance assessment with a high superior in sight reading. 6th grade chorus received an Excellent rating at Carowinds Festival of Music.
Chamber Orchestra performed at SC Music Educators Orchestra Division State Performance Assessment at North Greenville University and earned a Superior, highest rating given. Chamber Orchestra attended the Carowinds Festival of Music and earned an Excellent rating. We had 2 students make it in to Greenville County Middle School All County Orchestra; 1 student passed the audition for SCMEA Orchestra Division Region II Jr. Orchestra; 1 Student passed the audition for the Intermezzo level of the Greenville County Youth Symphony; 3 students earned superiors, highest rating given, at SCMEA Orchestra Division Solo and Ensemble Festival.
For the 3rd year in a row, Greer Middle School faculty and staff ranked 1st out of 22 middle schools in Greenville County in contributions donated to the United Way. The faculty and staff raised over nineteen thousand dollars. This is a prime example of how giving and caring the staff is at Greer Middle. All of our faculty members are highly qualified, and they continue to seek advanced degrees.
Our students continue to increase their academic success inside the classroom. For the 2017-18 year, Greer Middle is projected to meet our annual SC Ready & SC PASS goals set by Greenville County schools in English Language Arts, Math, and Science evidence by 3rd quarter MasteryConnect benchmark assessment. This year every Greer Middle student received a Chromebook to increase student participation in learning.
The cooperative efforts of the staff, PTSA, and SIC increased our parental involvement opportunities. Some of the parental involvement opportunities included: 6th Grade Orientation, 7th/8th Grade Orientation, Washington DC Parent Meeting, PTSA Open House, GMS Book Fair, Bring Dads To Lunch, Bring Moms To Lunch, Goodies For Grands, Bring Grandparents To Lunch, Miss GMS Pageants, Black and Gold Day, and Fall/Spring concerts in Strings, Band, and Chorus.
Greer Christian Learning Center provides opportunities to a total of over 545 students on a weekly basis for release time activities, which are requested by parents and supported by our community.
The school culture and climate of Greer Middle School is regarded as safe and friendly with a high rate of student, parent, and staff satisfaction with the school environment. Greer Middle School follows a model of high expectations and continuous improvement as we strive to be on the cutting edge of student achievement.
