The faculty and staff of Carolina Springs Middle School are committed to and in pursuit of creating an exemplary learning experience for young adolescents. In the 2019–2020 school year, CSMS continued to build upon our tenets of Character, Scholarship, Memories and Service through all that we do for our students and families in this community.
In April, we proudly earned the distinction of a National Showcase Capturing Kids’ Hearts School! This honor underscores our shared focus and commitment to quality relationships as a foundation to our educational program. We intentionally cultivate healthy relationships and positive classroom environments to maximize each student’s educational progress. Through CKH, we learn, practice and develop power skills including interpersonal skills, self-advocacy and good citizenship. This year, 11 CSMS students were named as Junior Scholars, 461 students earned Honor Roll, 161 students earned all A’s, five students earned all A’s all three years at CSMS and eight students advanced to state-level National History Day competition.
Our teachers continued to implement innovative pedagogy as they strengthened and refined our work with the student engagement instructional model. They collaborated to implement creative learning experiences that leveraged technology, collaboration and support of individual student needs through teacher-led small groups. We completed our second year as a Dynamic Learning Project school, a national initiative to improve equity in education by empowering teachers to leverage technology in more powerful ways. Six CSMS teachers and one of our counselors achieved National Board Certification this year. Our teachers also wrote and received a Bright Ideas Grant, S.C. State Credit Union Teacher Grant and Walmart Community Grant.
We are grateful for a supportive community and partnerships that support growing and empowering each child to design the future. We have an active School Improvement Council and PTSA. Parents and guardians visited and volunteered in activities and events including All Pro Dads, “One Book, One School” Night, World Cultures Night and various field trips. Huskies continued to give back to the community through acts of service by supporting Special Olympics, Relay For Life and the United Way. Our Student vs. Faculty basketball game helped our staff raise over $4,000 for Relay For Life and we contributed more than $1,000 to United Way.
Our students continue to impress us with their dedication and creativity to both individual and group efforts. The CSMS archery team continued to shine as they competed in the state competition and earned third place overall. This year, our students packed the Husky House with their first musical theater performance, “The Wizard of Oz,” and the CSMS Dance Team won 1st overall at the Star Talent National Talent Competition! We had two honorable mentions at the South Carolina Speech and Theatre Association competition, 13 students were accepted for Tri-DAC, and both seventh and eighth grade orchestra students earned Superior ratings at the South Carolina Music Educators Association Concert Performance Assessment. Sixteen orchestra students participated in Lexington One District Honors Orchestra, four students participated in Lexington One District Honors Choir, one student was accepted for South Carolina Junior All-State Orchestra, one student was accepted into the S.C. Governor’s School summer program, seven students were accepted for the Midlands Junior Region Orchestra, 12 students were selected and participated in the district’s Honors Art program, several students received first-time acceptances to the Tri-DAC summer camp, 11 were selected for the South Carolina Band Directors Association Region Two Band, 13 students in the Lexington One Honors Band, two students placed in the SCBDA All-State Band and the band received a Superior rating at State Concert Performance Assessment. Our students’ artwork adorned the Lexington District One Central Services building and the Lexington County Courthouse this year.
