Thomas C. Cario Middle School is dedicated to preparing students with the knowledge, skills, and character embodied in the Profile of a South Carolina Graduate. Our work is guided by three foundational priorities: providing an exceptional middle school experience for every student, supporting and developing outstanding educators, and fostering meaningful partnerships with families and the broader community.
At Cario, students are encouraged to think deeply, solve problems creatively, and demonstrate strong character in all they do. We offer a challenging academic program that includes opportunities to earn high school credit in Algebra I, Geometry, English I, Spanish, and Computer Science. Beyond the core curriculum, students can explore a wide range of interests through courses in Project Lead the Way pre-engineering, business and financial literacy, marine science, health sciences, video production, and the visual and performing arts.
Our students regularly distinguish themselves in academic competitions at the local, state, and national levels, including the CCSD Spellbound Spelling Bee, Quest, LEGO Robotics, the South Carolina State Scholastic Chess Championship, the National Geographic Geography Bee, and Mock Trial. We are especially proud of our award-winning Fine Arts programs, which continue to earn recognition and accolades year after year.
Data from nationally normed assessments consistently demonstrates growth in student achievement, critical thinking, and problem solving abilities. Through a strong Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), our faculty works to ensure that every student has access to the academic, social, and emotional support needed to thrive.
Literacy remains a central focus of our instructional efforts. In support of the district’s goal of ensuring all students read on grade level by 2027, we have strengthened literacy instruction across all subject areas. These efforts include targeted intervention and acceleration opportunities, ongoing analysis of student data, and professional learning designed to enhance reading instruction throughout the curriculum.
Beyond academics, Cario is committed to developing leadership, empathy, responsibility, and self-advocacy. Through organizations such as the National Junior Honor Society and Student Council, students are empowered to serve others and lead with integrity. Their dedication to making a difference is evident in the many philanthropic and service initiatives they champion. Our extensive selection of clubs span academics, arts, STEM, leadership, horticulture, literacy, and special interest groups provide opportunities for every student to connect with their passions and talents.
Outside the classroom, Cario students continue to excel in athletics and extracurricular activities through recreation programs and community organizations. These successes are made possible through the ongoing support of our families and community partners, whose collaboration plays a vital role in our school’s achievements.
As we continue to grow, we remain committed to reflection, innovation, and continuous improvement. Our vision is to be South Carolina’s premier neighborhood middle school. By staying focused on supporting students, investing in our staff, and strengthening community partnerships, we will continue preparing graduates who are confident, compassionate, and ready to succeed in an ever-changing world.
