C.A. Johnson High School stands as a beacon of academic excellence, community pride, and rich tradition. This year alone, our 69 graduates earned more than $2.6 million in scholarships, demonstrating the limitless potential of our students. Our boys’ basketball team captured the South Carolina 1A State Championship, further showcasing the spirit of determination and excellence that defines our school community. In addition, three of our students received districtwide scholarships, including the prestigious Dr. Percy Mack Scholarship. Our salutatorian was also named the Richland One Career and Technical Education Student of the Year—the third time in four years that a C.A. Johnson student has earned this distinguished honor.
These accomplishments reflect our unwavering commitment to academic excellence and innovation. This year, we increased our school report card score by 11 points and by more than 16 points over the past two years. Our End-of-Course Examination scores improved in every tested area, demonstrating the collective dedication of our students, teachers, staff, and families. We are truly “Excellent by Design.”
As one of South Carolina’s last surviving historically African American high schools, C.A. Johnson proudly honors its legacy while boldly preparing students for the future. Our students—past, present, and future—carry the enduring legacy of the mighty Green Hornets with pride, resilience, and purpose. We embrace the responsibility of preserving our history while creating new opportunities for the next generation to learn, lead, and succeed.
We are equally committed to the holistic development of our students. Through innovative programs such as Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Prisma Health’s MedEx Program, the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET), and Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG), we implement proven practices that promote student achievement and lifelong success. Our six career pathways—General Management, Biomedical Science, Health Science, Mental Health and Family Systems, Firefighter Training Academy, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)—provide students with meaningful, hands-on experiences that connect classroom learning to real-world opportunities.
Beyond academics, our students flourish in visual and performing arts, AFJROTC, college dual-enrollment courses provided through a partnership with Midlands Technical College, work-based learning, athletics, and numerous student-led organizations. These experiences empower students to discover their passions, strengthen their leadership skills, and develop a strong sense of identity and purpose.
At the heart of C.A. Johnson is a deep commitment to building meaningful relationships within our school and throughout the broader community. We believe in cultivating a safe, caring, and supportive environment where every student feels valued, empowered, and prepared to thrive in a global society. We are also intentional about renewing and strengthening our partnerships with parents, alumni, and community stakeholders, recognizing that authentic engagement enriches the educational experience of every student.
C.A. Johnson High School is more than a school—it is a legacy of excellence, a cornerstone of the community, and a launching pad for future leaders. Rooted in history and driven by innovation, we remain steadfast in our mission to inspire, empower, and prepare the next generation of Green Hornets to make a lasting impact on their communities and the world. We invite you to join us as we continue to improve, lead, and inspire future generations of Green Hornets.
Hornet Pride. Honored Past. Boundless Future.
