Dutchman Creek Middle School is committed to helping all students develop the world class skills as defined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. Dutchman Creek focuses its efforts on all areas of academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, and social equity. Students at Dutchman Creek Middle School are immersed in collaborative instruction, learning workshops, and blended learning approaches in order to bridge concrete and abstract thoughts and to assist in understanding factors relevant to the real world. Teams of teachers have developed curriculum maps and interim assessments for math, science, social studies, and language arts while Improvement Teams have developed strategies to meet the challenges that the schools face today. As teachers consider curriculum, instruction, and assessment, best practices are affirmed and strengthened. A variety of data sources are examined to determine the system’s effectiveness and its impact on student performance.
In addition, Dutchman Creek offers a wide range of support for students and families. All students are provided with instruction that enables them to show mastery on the standards-based state assessments regardless of disability, gifted and talented identification, or language acquisition level; however, by identifying students’ specific needs and areas of strength, each student receives instruction that best supports them as individual learners. All students participate in classes with high academic and behavioral expectations. .
The purpose and goal of the various branches of the Dutchman Creek Professional Learning Community is to collect and analyze relevant data to support decisions that will afford our students the best educational experiences possible. In addition, we continue to provide opportunities for community involvement and participation in the efforts of our school.
In 2016-2017, we had 27 junior scholars that were screened and identified in the eighth grade. Seventh grade students participated in the Duke TIP program. Six of the students earned special state recognition. Additionally, several of our seventh graders were local and state winners in the National History Day Competition. Two of our students competed on the national level and did very well. Eighth grade students achieved 99% pass rate on the English I EOC Exam. Our music department included more than one-third of our student body. Excellence in the arts is the standard at Dutchman Creek. Our band, chorus and orchestra students have all gained superior ratings in competitions throughout the state this year, including numerous music festivals. The athletic department at DCMS is unsurpassed. We have dedicated coaches who work diligently to motivate athletes and build productive, well-rounded citizens. Our seventh grade football team went undefeated this year and were conference champions. The seventh and eighth grade boys track teams were also conference champions.
We continue to focus on common assessments and integrated units of study.
