At Tanglewood Middle School, our mission is to educate, motivate, and inspire every student every day to reach their full potential. As both a Leader in Me and AVID school, we are committed to developing the academic, leadership, and life skills students need to become successful learners and responsible citizens. Through engaging instruction, meaningful relationships, and intentional opportunities, we empower students to develop the World Class Skills outlined in the South Carolina Profile of the Graduate, including collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, and personal responsibility.
Founded in 1965, Tanglewood Middle School has a proud tradition of serving students and families in Greenville County's Westside community. Located on a 60-acre campus, our school reflects the rich cultural diversity of the community we serve. Students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures create a welcoming environment where diversity is celebrated and global perspectives are embraced.
As a Title I school, we are committed to ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality education and the support needed to achieve academic success. Federal funding allows us to reduce class sizes, provide targeted academic interventions, strengthen family engagement, and offer resources that address the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students.
Since 2015, our partnership with United Way of Greenville County has expanded our ability to serve the whole child through a wraparound services model. Collaborations with organizations such as OnTrack Greenville and Prisma Health provide students and families with valuable resources that help remove barriers to learning and promote student success.
Leadership development is embedded throughout our school culture through the Leader in Me framework, which empowers students to develop confidence, responsibility, goal-setting skills, and leadership habits that extend beyond the classroom. As an AVID school, we also provide students with the organizational, academic, and college-and-career readiness skills needed to excel in rigorous coursework and prepare for future opportunities.
At Tanglewood, we believe every student is capable of excellence. Our instructional program focuses on rigorous, standards-based learning that challenges students to think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively, and take ownership of their learning. Through collaborative Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), teachers continuously analyze student data, refine instruction, and implement research-based strategies to ensure academic growth for every learner.
Students have access to a variety of academic and leadership opportunities designed to develop their talents and prepare them for future success. Programs such as honors courses, National Beta Club, Student Council, STAR Academy, academic interventions, after-school tutoring, and leadership development provide meaningful opportunities for students to grow both inside and outside the classroom. Many students also have the opportunity to earn high school credit before leaving middle school, supporting Greenville County Schools' Graduation Plus initiative.
Technology is fully integrated into instruction through our one-to-one Chromebook initiative and Google Workspace for Education. These tools allow students to collaborate, create, communicate, and develop the digital literacy skills necessary for success in college, careers, and an increasingly connected world.
Our dedicated faculty and staff remain committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where students are encouraged to dream big, persevere through challenges, and reach their full potential. Strong relationships with families and community partners continue to strengthen our school and create opportunities for student success.
At Tanglewood Middle School, we strive each day to educate, motivate, and inspire every student while preparing them to become confident learners, compassionate leaders, and productive citizens. Together, we are building a school community where every student is empowered to achieve more and realize their fullest potential.
